Biventricular surgical repair of “Swiss Cheese” ventricular septal defects with two-patch and right ventricle apex excluding technique: preliminary experience and clinical results

Abstract Background “ Swiss Cheese ” ventricular septal defects (VSDs) is a kind of rare and complex congenital heart the surgical management remains controversial challenge. We reviewed our preliminary clinical experience on biventricular repair “Swiss Cheese” VSDs with two-patch right ventricle apex excluding technique in 10 cases. Methods From May 2014 to December 2019, series patients (M/F = 3/7) were admitted center. Nine cases underwent one-stage 1 case received two-stage same technique. Surgical was done cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) all Two fresh autologous pericardium patches used close outflow tract area trabecular respectively as result, excluded from inflow tract. Results All operations successful. Median CPB time aortic clamping 96 min 68 respectively. Delayed chest closure performed 2 within 48–72 h postoperatively. The mechanical ventilation ICU stay 131.3 8 days length hospital after operation 11 (9–42) days. There no mortality major complication except for ventilator associated pneumonia. death during median follow-up 3.2 years.. latest echocardiography results showed left function normal Conclusions Biventricular infants safe feasible favorable early mid-term results.
